A few years ago, I expressed a long-held opinion of mine to these two wonderful musicians, that there are only four categories of music - if you're driving in your car and a song comes on the radio, you'll react in one of four ways: leave the volume as it is, turn it up, turn it down, or turn it off. Gemma seemed to consider this for a moment and then said , "No, there's one more: when you have to pull the car over to the side of the road and turn off the engine" There's not many pieces of music fit that category. I was a trans kid in the 80s and this song had some additional meaning to me in terms of self-discovery, but also finding people who could love me in this world. Whenever I hear it I remember feeling how for some reason, when I had no idea what was going on with me, why my life was so difficult, I remember feeling ok and even joyous, even at a time that I hadn't experienced all of these wonderful emotions of being in love and being loved and loving myself. I felt hope. Thank you for this eulogy.
